About us

The Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery at the University Hospital Cologne specializes in the treatment of all kind of injuries and diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

Prof. Dr. Peer Eysel and his team are known for their high level of expertise in the treatment of spinal conditions/injuries, hip and knee replacements and musculoskeletal cancers, while our trauma surgery department is dedicated to treating, predominantly, acute injuries caused by accidents. Prof. Dr. Lars P. Müller is one of the leading and most well-respected experts in the area of elbow surgery.

Our highly differentiated medical technologies and equipment, which, among others, include large state-of-the-art radiotherapy and nuclear medicine equipment, make us one of the most well-equipped clinics in Europe. These attributes, combined with our professional competence, multimodal infrastructure and interprofessional teamwork allow us to offer our patients first-rate services and conditions for effective diagnostics and treatment.

Our strengths

Personalized treatment plans for adults and children

One of our top priorities is to provide our patients with personal consultations and detailed advice to allow them to make well-informed treatment choices together with their treating physician.

Cutting edge surgical techniques

We offer cutting edge, evidence-based and validated surgical procedures such as, for example, 3D image-guided surgery. This means that our patients benefit from a high level of competence and high quality medical services.

Interdisciplinary treatment approaches

Our treatment recommendations are always based on interdisciplinary approaches and provided in consultation with other clinical departments in order to make sure that each of our patients receives the most appropriate treatment and care. For this reason, we closely collaborate in particular with specialists from the departments of internal medicine (Heart Clinic, Nephrology, Diabetology) and anesthesiology (intensive care, pain therapy).

Treatments for complex pre-existing and concomitant conditions

Patients with pre-existing conditions, in particular serious ones, generally require highly specialized treatment. For this reason, we always perform an extensive range of tests to determine our patients' state of health to make sure we can provide them with the best treatment recommendations.

State-of-the-art implant technology

All of our joint replacement surgery is performed using cutting-edge technology. Each replacement is furthermore planned in advance using special software to ensure a high level of surgical precision. This means that we can ensure a high level of safety during surgery and a level of high accuracy concerning implant placement.

Postoperative care for rapid rehabilitation

Our team of doctors and qualified nursing staff are dedicated to helping our patients to heal, rebuild their strength and maximize their range of motion as quickly as possible. To this end, we provide our patients with interdisciplinary treatment and care in close collaboration with the hospital's physiotherapy department (UniReha) that involves both physical and occupational therapy.
